The quality and design of a cratchboard determines the finish that will be achieved by a cover. We often work on boards that, while beautifully made and finished, create problems that complicate the making of a cover with clean smooth lines. This led to us making our own cratchboards which we offer in a range of styles: - Split Glazed
- Fully Glazed
- Unglazed Traditional Board

Fully Glazed Cratchboard
Unglazed Traditional Board
The glazed boards are made from 2” thick Sapele hardwood and the traditional board from 18mm marine ply with sapele trimming and king plank. Hardwood boards are finished with Ronseal, which we have found to offer a better lasting finish than many expensive marine varnishes. After a few years it will fade a little but all that is required to re-finish is a light sanding and a new coat can be applied which will be dry in a couple of hours.
We will only make a cratchboard as part of a cratchcover order and while we are happy to make boards on site we are not able to carry and cut the glass (6.4mm laminate is recommended). While we are on our mooring we will happily supply the glass but if out cruising the customer will need to get glass cut locally which we will make a template for. We will cut and stain all the trims required and fit the glass if it is supplied while we are still at the job. Otherwise customers will need to fit their own glass, which is a very simple.Guide price: £300 - £400 If you wish to make your own board for us to cover please have a look at the "advice for making cratchboards" page and follow the advice given.
